Recently, the Forestry Bureau of Guangdong Province and ten other departments jointly issued the “Implementation Opinions on Accelerating the Innovative Development of Guangdong's Bamboo Industry”, proposing to vigorously promote the integration and innovative development of precision cultivation of bamboo forests, deep processing of bamboo, and the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries of bamboo culture, tourism, and health care, and strive to turn small bamboo into a large industry.
According to The Implementation Opinions, it is expected that by 2025, Guangdong will achieve a gross output worth 60 billion yuan in bamboo industry and incubate a number of provincial-level industry development bases.
Good geographic conditions to breed high-quality bamboo
Guangdong is subtropical with abundant water and thermal resources, giving birth to a variety of bamboo resources. The main types of bamboo include bamboo used for timber such as bamboo, pink bamboo, green skinned bamboo, tea stem bamboo, as well as edible bamboo such as mahogany bamboo, sweet bamboo, thunder bamboo, and Luo bamboo, distributed in cities such as Zhaoqing, Shaoguan, and Qingyuan.
At present, there are 2,243 bamboo and bamboo shoot processing enterprises in the province, including 2 national key forestry leading enterprises in bamboo and 7 provincial forestry leading enterprises. Since 2021, Guangdong has increased efforts to cultivate bamboo industry development bases and successfully established the National Forestry Industry Demonstration Park in Deqing County. In October 2022, the bamboo industry development bases in Jiaoling, Renhua, Guangning and other three counties were awarded the first batch of Guangdong Province's forestry characteristic industry development bases.
Bamboo eco-tourism becomes a big hit
As winter approaches, in Guangning County, which is only an hour and a half drive from Guangzhou and Foshan, the mountains are lush with bamboo forests, lush and dense, becoming a beautiful scenery in the countryside.
Guangning's bamboo forest covers an area of approximately 1.08 million acres, with 128 types of bamboo. It is a central production area for green bamboo worldwide, with over 360 bamboo processing enterprises. In 2021, the county produced 600,000 tons of raw bamboo, processed 400,000 tons of raw bamboo, and the total output value of the bamboo industry reached 3.3 billion yuan. In Guangning, with a population of 500,000, there are nearly 100,000 forest farmers who directly benefit from the development of the bamboo industry.
With the fame as "Hometown of Bamboo in China", Guangning vigorously develops the leisure experience and sightseeing tourism industry that combines bamboo culture and bamboo ecology, builds the first batch of national forest health bases in China, and creates tourist attractions such as Guangning Bamboo Sea Grand View, Bamboo Culture Museum, Bicui Lake Bamboo Plantation, Baoding Mountain Tourist Resort, and Suijiang Cultural Tourism. Among them, Zhuhai Grand View is the only 4A tourist attraction in Guangdong with bamboo as the theme, and has been rated as the "Guangdong Forest Health Base", initially forming the Guangning characteristic bamboo ecological and cultural tourism industry.
In 2021, Guangning County's ecological tourism and health industry, mainly relying on bamboo, received 923,000 tourists annually, effectively promoting local economic and social development and rural revitalization.
Like Guangning, various regions in Guangdong Province rely on bamboo landscape resources and long-standing bamboo culture to vigorously develop the bamboo culture tourism industry, promote the layout of tourism supporting facilities with local characteristics such as bamboo scenic spots, characteristic farmhouses, and mountain homestays, and achieve the integrated development of bamboo culture education, health tourism, and processing and manufacturing. At present, the bamboo industry has become one of the pillar industries for economic development in the mountainous areas of eastern and northwestern Guangdong, and the main channel for farmers to increase their income and become prosperous.
Four measures to boom bamboo industry

In 2021, the output value of the forestry industry in the province was 860.7 billion yuan, ranking first in the country for 13 consecutive years. Among them, the bamboo industry is 13.5-billion-yuan, accounting for 1.57% of the province's forestry industry output value. The bamboo industry output value ranks seventh in the country.
The relevant person in charge of the Guangdong Provincial Forestry Bureau said that the construction of a modern forestry industry system urgently requires Guangdong to take the bamboo industry as the starting point, take the lead in the development mechanism and industrial development model of the bamboo industry, and promote innovative development of the bamboo industry in the whole province and even the whole country. Guangdong will focus on four aspects to ensure the timely achievement of the goals and tasks proposed in the Implementation Opinions.
1. Scientifically plan the development of the bamboo industry, using industry as the engine, low-carbon and negative carbon bamboo industry as the new growth pole, focusing on improving the level of deep processing of the bamboo industry, promoting the integration and innovative development of precision cultivation of bamboo forests, deep processing of bamboo, and the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries of bamboo culture, tourism, and health care. We strive to achieve a comprehensive output value of 60 billion yuan in the bamboo industry in the province by 2025.
2. Strengthen targeted cultivation of bamboo forests, expand the area of high-quality bamboo resources, increase the output of bamboo materials, and ensure the supply of raw materials for bamboo processing. Efforts should be made to transform low yield and low efficiency bamboo forests, implement precise improvement projects for bamboo forests, and promote high-yield cultivation techniques for bamboo forests. By 2025, the bamboo forest area in the province will remain stable at over 8 million mu, with a high standard promotion of the total area of newly added large-diameter bamboo forests in the province of over 50,000 mu, and the high-quality construction of a number of demonstration bamboo forest bases.
3. Promote the innovative development of the bamboo processing industry, and promote the development of modern bamboo industries such as replacing wood with bamboo, steel with bamboo, plastic with bamboo, cotton with bamboo, grain with bamboo, fertilizer with bamboo, and production capacity with bamboo. Vigorously promote the development of industrial projects for recombining bamboo, bamboo composite materials, and bamboo winding composite materials, and promote the transformation and upgrading of deep processing of bamboo products. By 2025, 10 provincial-level bamboo industry development bases will be established, and 6 bamboo technology innovation industry clusters will be established, forming a new pattern of high-quality development of the bamboo industry.
4. Promote the large-scale development of leading enterprises in the bamboo industry and cultivate a number of provincial-level bamboo industry characteristic industry development bases. By 2025, we will establish two or more national forestry industry demonstration parks for the bamboo industry in Guangdong, cultivate 10 provincial-level bamboo characteristic industry development bases, 6 provincial-level bamboo forest health and wellness bases, 2 national key leading enterprises in the bamboo industry, and 10 provincial-level forestry leading enterprises, and continuously improve the level of bamboo industrialization in the province.
