On July 12, 2022, a wind, solar, hydrogen, and ammonia integrated demonstration project invested by the National Energy Group's Guohua Investment Mengxi Company, which is located at the Port Processing Park of Urad Middle Banner Ganqi Maodu, Bayannur, Inner Mongolia, gets greenlit.
The project covers an area of approximately 300 acres, with a planned total investment of 2.3 billion yuan. The planned new energy installed capacity is 1.1 million kilowatts, including 800000 kilowatts of wind power and 300000 kilowatts of photovoltaic power. The project utilizes wind and solar power to decompose water and produce high-quality hydrogen gas, which is then used to produce synthetic ammonia. The annual output of green ammonia is about 300000 tons, which is used for chemical production in the industrial park in western Mongolia.
After completion, the project will generate annual electricity about 3.031 billion kilowatt hours, with annual production of one ton of ammonia (consuming about 164 kilograms of standard coal), emitting 0.54 ton of carbon dioxide. It is expected to save 109,200 tons of coal annually. The energy consumption is much lower than traditional fossil fuel to produce hydrogen.
Hydrogen-Ammonia integration is rising
The above project is a new progress made by the National Energy Group in the path of integrating wind, solar, thermal, and hydrogen storage together. During the 14th Five Year Plan, National Energy Group aims to become a global leader in supplying hydrogen energy and providing hydrogen application technology, which spurs it to build multiple comprehensive energy bases with a capacity of tens of millions of kilowatts along this path.
The strategy that National Energy Group made for Inner Mongolia is highly advantageous as Inner Mongolia ranks first in the country in terms of its wind and solar resources, and it has a unique advantage in developing hydrogen energy. The hydrogen energy application scenarios, such as green hydrogen chemical industry, heavy truck substitution, and full hydrogen smelting, are substantial. A large number of influential enterprises have seized the high ground of the market for further expansion.
Data shows that the first batch of integrated demonstration projects for wind solar hydrogen production in Inner Mongolia will kick off this year and is expected to achieve an annual production of 72,000 tons of green hydrogen by 2023. It is planned that by 2025, the supply capacity of green hydrogen will reach 500,000 tons, and the output value of the hydrogen energy will reach 100 billion yuan, becoming a new increment of high-quality economic development for Inner Mongolia.
Among these projects, hydrogen ammonia integration projects are receiving increasing attention. Hydrogen energy has many advantages, yet it is difficult to store and transport, thus causing high cost. Amidst the high cost of hydrogen energy, ammonia appears. It is composed of one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms, making it a natural hydrogen storage medium; Under normal pressure, if the temperature drops to -33 degrees Celsius, it can liquefy and facilitate safe transportation. Currently, over 80% of the world's ammonia is used for the production of fertilizers, and ammonia has a complete trade and transportation system. In theory, renewable energy can be used to produce hydrogen, which can then be converted into ammonia and transported to the destination. Research has found that ammonia, as an efficient hydrogen storage medium, has advantages such as high energy density, easy liquefaction storage and transportation, high safety, and no carbon emissions.

On May 5, 2022, the Alxa League signed a centralized contract for the spring of 2022, which includes the demonstration project of a low-carbon park integrating one million kilowatts of wind, solar, hydrogen, ammonia, and infrastructure in the National Energy Alxa High tech Zone. This project adopts the integrated design of wind, solar, hydrogen, and ammonia, relying on the current situation of high energy consumption and high hydrogen (ammonia) consumption of chemical enterprises in the high-tech zone, to provide new energy green electricity for the high-tech zone, and to carry out the production and supply of green hydrogen and green ammonia. The estimated total investment of the project is RMB 13.7 billion, of which RMB 1.3 billion is invested in the hydrogen-ammonia projects.
After the completion of the project, it will generate 4.759 billion kilowatt hours of new energy annually, produce 700,000 tons of ammonia annually, and implement a phased phase of 200,000 tons of ammonia production, with an annual hydrogen production capacity of 40,000 standard cubic meters. The utilization rate of renewable energy in the project has reached 94.73%. After the completion of the project, through multiple projects such as the sand industry, new energy, and hydrogen ammonia factory, it will drive about 500 employment opportunities, reach an ecological restoration area of about 25,000 acres, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.75 million tons annually, and generate annual profits and taxes of about 200 million yuan.
2. On March 28, 2022, the People's Government of Chifeng and Envision Technology Group held a strategic cooperation agreement signing ceremony in the form of online video. The two sides will continue to deepen cooperation in areas such as green hydrogen and ammonia industry base, zero carbon industry park, intelligent wind turbine manufacturing, shared energy storage, energy and carbon management system, and forest carbon sink. Among them, the integrated demonstration project of wind solar green hydrogen green ammonia is planned to produce 1.52 million tons of zero carbon industrial gas products per year. The first phase of the project will be put into operation within two years, becoming the world's first zero hydrocarbon ammonia project.
The Green-Hydrogen & Green-Ammonia Production Base will produce ammonia, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and other industrial gas products with zero carbon emission, hence cutting down the carbon emission of the development zone and transforming it into a zero-carbon industrial park.

6. On December 15, 2021, Jilin Electric Power Co., Ltd. held a special promotion meeting for the 10-million-kilowatt-hydrogen production base in Da'an Chemical Industry Park, and made arrangements and deployments for high-quality project construction. Jidian Corporation will take the "integrated project of wind solar hydrogen production and ammonia synthesis" as the starting point to start the construction of a 10-million-kilowatt hydrogen production base in Da'an Chemical Industry Park.
Ammonia, as an important chemical product, plays a crucial role in social and economic development. In China, over 80% of ammonia is used to produce nitrogen fertilizers and other compound fertilizers, such as urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, etc.
However, the production of traditional synthetic ammonia often comes with a large amount of carbon dioxide emissions, and using green hydrogen produced by renewable energy water electrolysis as feed gas to participate in the synthetic ammonia reaction is one of the ways to reduce carbon emissions in the synthetic ammonia industry.
Applying green hydrogen to the production of synthetic ammonia can avoid the occurrence of water gas shift reaction and achieve zero carbon emissions at the hydrogen production end. At present, the annual demand for hydrogen in China's synthetic ammonia industry is about 9 million tons. If all hydrogen is replaced by green hydrogen, it can reduce carbon emissions by nearly 150 million tons per year. On the other hand, the use of green hydrogen can also reduce the consumption of traditional fossil materials such as coal and natural gas.
Hydrogen and ammonia serve as an important carrier to support the large-scale utilization of renewable energy and the development of the hydrogen energy industry. It is also an important way for energy transformation and upgrading in the new era, and is of great significance for China to achieve the goals of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality".
